Proper Care for Your Area Rugs

persian and other fine rugsYou have some area rugs in your home. You have wall-to-wall carpeting as well. There is a significant difference between area rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting, though.

Area rugs can be rolled up and removed when needed. Wall-to-wall carpeting is fixed to the surface of your floors. Those area rugs may be placed in hallways like runners, along entryways to try and trap more debris that commonly gets tracked into the house from outside, or to help protect wall-to-wall carpet recently installed.

Caring for these area rugs is a little bit different than providing care for your wall-to-wall carpeting.

Vacuum regularly.

Just as with your wall-to-wall carpeting, you want to regularly vacuum your area rugs. It should be done at least once a week, if not more frequently than that.

However, keep in mind that vacuuming alone isn’t enough to keep your carpeting or area rugs completely clean. They still need to be professionally cleaned every once in a while, at least once a year, if not more often than that.

Rotate those area rugs.

You should get in the habit of turning the area rugs around to spread out wear patterns more evenly. If you don’t, you will begin to see wear marks in the center, alongside, or wherever people have a tendency to walk across the rug most frequently.

Move out of direct sunlight.

You should also consider moving your area rugs out of direct sunlight, as much as possible. The sunlight is going to fade the rug, especially the colors on it. If you can’t limit the amount of direct sunlight the area rug is exposed to, make sure you rotate it more frequently.

Have them professionally cleaned at least once a year.

This can include having a professional carpet cleaning service come to your home, roll up your area rugs, and take them away to have them professionally cleaned. The more you care for these area rugs, the more enjoyment you’ll get out of them as the years roll along. Eventually, though, you may need to consider replacing them with new area rugs.
