Pet Stain & Odor Treatment

pet-dog-cat-urine-on-carpetPets are a vital part of many families. Much like children they tend to have accidents from time to time. Unless it’s a major and continuous problem you don’t want to get rid of your pet over an occasional stain. But pet urine on carpet, rugs, or upholstery can do much more than cause unpleasant odor.

Urine does simply sit on top of the carpet surface; it penetrates deep into the fibers. It can contaminate the carpet backing and any other flooring material underneath if it gets deep enough. Often, without your knowledge, pets will urinate continually in the same general location, causing significant contamination and damage over time.

Urine odor will also eventually permeate the air. No matter what type of floor you have, urine will soak in and cause damage. Cement, wood, carpeting, tack strips, framework, drywall can all be affected by pet accidents. As urine dries, the liquid evaporates but the urine crystals become even more concentrated and pungent. Simple cleaning will not remove this odor. In fact, these urine crystals are frequently re-activated by moisture.

As time goes on the urine can affect dyes in your carpet. Not every accident will result in a permanent stain but if your pet uses the same area time and again, avoiding a stain is nearly impossible. If urine spots are permitted to develop gradually and go unnoticed for a long time, the carpet fibers and dyes might be irreparably harmed. With beige carpets, pet urine attacks the blue dye and leaves behind the yellow and red dye. The resulting stain appears yellow, orange or red.

If these areas are left untreated for too long pet urine can damage carpets in a number of ways. Moisture will cause carpet layers to loosen resulting in separation of the backing material. The carpet seams can separate and be severely damaged. These more serious problems are permanent, and require replacement. Odor is another major issue, especially if you have cats. Unless cat urine is entirely neutralized or removed, complete odor elimination is improbable. Several products are sold to tackle odor, but many just hide the odor and, during periods of warm weather, the odor might resurface.
