The 3 Biggest Mistakes Homeowners Make when Caring for Their Carpeting

tips to help keep your house looking goodMistakes are going to happen when you are taking care of carpeting. There are plenty of mistakes that homeowners in and throughout the Greater Toronto Area make when it comes to caring for their carpeting.

These mistakes can shorten the life of the carpeting, causing them to have to replace it far sooner than they should have to or expected to. Avoid three of the biggest mistakes and your carpeting should last at least 10, 12, and maybe even 15 years or longer.

Big Mistake #1: Assuming vacuuming is all that’s needed.

Just running a vacuum cleaner over the carpeting once a week isn’t getting all of the dirt, dust, and other pollutants out of it. There could be allergens and other particulates they get caught in the carpet fibers.

Most residential vacuum cleaners are not strong enough to get deep down into the carpet pile. They just clear the dirt and dust away from the top layer, making it appear as though it’s clean. Over time, though, that dirt will begin to pile up toward the bottom of the carpet pile and that can be a serious problem.

Big Mistake #2: Scrubbing out stains.

When that wine or grape juice is spilled on your nice, new white carpeting, you probably went into a panic. You kept thinking about all of the ways they could get ruined. You immediately ran for towels, including paper towels, and started scrubbing the area to get everything out.

Scrubbing carpeting when something is spilled on it is only pushing it deeper down into the carpet pile. While you may be able to clear out the staining material from the outer layers of the carpet, it has rooted itself deep down at the bottom of the carpet and along the foam under padding.

Big Mistake #3: Ignoring professional carpet cleaning services.

It’s best to have your carpets professionally cleaned every six months, but most homeowners only have this done every few years or when they are expecting a lot of company. If you don’t have your carpets professionally cleaned on a regular basis, it’s sort of like not visiting your dentist every six months. You may be fine for a while, but it will eventually catch up to you.
