How Not to Clean Leather Furniture

Spilling a Bottle of Water isn’t always ‘Harmless’ to CarpetingYou have leather furniture all throughout your Toronto area home. You may have a leather recliner, sofa, and even dining room chairs. While you may require professional cleaning services for your area rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting, most of these cleaning companies are not going to provide care for vinyl leather.

There are many cleaning solutions and techniques that people use to help clean their leather furniture and help it remain in great shape for a long time, but there is one thing every homeowner should know about cleaning this type of leather furniture.

Never clean leather with water.

You might have spilled something on the leather furniture and rush to the kitchen to grab paper towels and something to wipe it off with. Whether it was wine, grape juice, soda, sauce from spaghetti, or something else, you want to avoid the instant temptation to grab a paper towel and wet it down.

Water on leather will certainly clean up whatever spilled on it, but that water absorbs into the leather itself and can ultimately lead to cracking.

Leather is conditioned and requires moisturization on a consistent basis in order to avoid drying and cracking. If you add water onto the leather surface this is going to remove some of the natural oils contained within the leather. When that happens, when those natural oils are extruded, it increases the risk of drying out and cracking.

You can certainly apply leather treatment after you’ve had a mishap, but the best thing to do as soon as something is spilled on the furniture is to blot it up with a dry cloth or paper towel. Avoid scrubbing because that will only push the moisture deeper into the leather itself.

If you spill something on your carpeting and it causes a stain, call a professional carpet cleaning service like Royal Interior Cleaning and they can come up to your house and return your carpets to a like new condition.
