How to Remove Small Stains from Your Carpet

Stain RemovalThere are a lot of differing opinions and methods people use to try and get stains out of their carpet and upholstery… some work, some don’t. But if you just have a little spill you want to be able to get it out yourself. Here are a few methods that will work on small stains – these need to be applied as soon as possible, once a stain has set you’ll have a very hard time getting it out without professional help.

Red wine spilled on a white carpet is a killer but if you act fast you can get it out. First, while the red wine is still wet, pour some white wine on it to dilute the color. Then clean the spot with a sponge and cold water. Sprinkle the area with salt and wait about 10 minutes. Now vacuum up the whole mess.

Use a baby wipe to blot up coffee spills from your rug or carpet; it absorbs both the liquid and the stain. Wipes can also be effectively deployed when attacking various spills and drips on your clothing and upholstered furniture.

Got ink on your carpet? Mix some milk with cornstarch to make a paste. Apply the paste to the ink stain. Allow the concoction to dry on the carpet for a few hours, then brush off the dried residue and vacuum it up.

Juice stains from kids seem inevitable but there is a clever way to take care of them. Blot the stain, pat it with a wet sponge, squirt some shaving cream on it, and then wipe clean with a damp sponge. Use the same technique on your clothes for small stains; shaving cream can remove that spot of breakfast you discovered you’re wearing during your once-over in the bathroom.

Lastly, vinegar is a brilliant household cleaner. Mix ¼ white vinegar and ¾ water in a spray bottle (this keeps too, so you can add it to your cleaning product shelf). Spray the stain, lay a damp terry cloth on it, and then iron over the cloth on the steam setting. Your stain will disappear.

These are some quite ways to help you out with life’s little spills; all very easy and pretty inexpensive. If you’ve got major stains or built up dirt you will need something stronger though, so give us a call. We’ll come out and do a free estimate on your carpets and get them looking brand new.
