The average carpeting for homeowners in Toronto should last between 10 to 15 years. Families with a lot of children and other people coming and going will likely get less life out of their carpeting, but by following these five tips, you should maximize how long that carpeting will look in your home.
1. Make sure you go with a quality pad.
You may be given a choice between the type of pad that goes under the wall-to-wall carpeting. If you do, make the right investment and choose a quality pad rather than a cheap one. The pad will not only offer more comfort, but it will help to extend the life of your carpet.
2. Use walk off mats.
Whenever someone comes into your home, you may want to encourage them to take off their shoes so that they aren’t tracking in mud, dirt, pebbles, or even gum on the bottom of their shoe onto your carpeting. You can also consider using walk-off mats inside and just outside of the rooms with carpeting. This would allow people to wipe off their feet before stepping onto the carpeting.
3. Use a quality vacuum cleaner.
You want to make sure that you vacuum your carpets on a regular basis. This should be at least once a week, but more if your carpets are seeing a lot of activity. You also want to make sure that you are using a high quality vacuum cleaner that has a considerable amount of section.
4. Remove stains as quickly as possible.
It is simply a fact that over the life of your carpet, there are going to be accidental spills or stains that occur. You want to make sure that you don’t scrub the stains because that will only push the liquid or other material deeper into the carpeting.
Instead, use warm water and dab the stain area to get as much out as possible.
5. Have your carpets professionally cleaned on a regular basis.
Most carpet manufacturers will recommend professional carpet cleaning at least once a year. Every six months is actually ideal, but if you are trying to save money, once a year should be the minimum.
Having your carpets professionally cleaned will help add years to their life and comfort to your home.
