3 Tips to Help Preserve That Persian Rug Longer

persian and other fine rugsA Persian rug is an incredible investment. Even if you purchased it used, you likely spent several thousand dollars on it. Higher quality Persian rugs can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Just as with most other things, they can wear out over time, even if they are not being walked on. Persian rugs that are hung on walls as decorative art can become worn out, frayed, and require some repair in time.

If you have a Persian rug, it’s a good idea to call on an experienced and professional carpet cleaning service to have that rug also cleaned regularly. Once a year is minimal, but twice a year is optimal.

In the meantime, here are three tips that can help you preserve that Persian rug and allow it to last as long as possible.

Tip #1: Have it professionally cleaned regularly.

As noted, when you have a professional cleaning service come in and clean your carpets and area rugs twice a year, it helps to remove the dirt and other contaminants that can degrade color, texture, and quality.

Tip #2: Keep the rug out of direct sunlight.

If that’s unavoidable, consider replacing your older windows was something that has low-e film coating on it. That cuts down on the sun’s ultraviolet radiation that penetrates into your house that will fade, dry out, and destroy furniture, rugs, and other items in your home.

Tip #3: Change the wear patterns.

People have a tendency to walk down the middle of the hallway or along one simple path in any number of rooms in your home. If you have a Persian rug in the entryway to your house, pay attention to where people walk across that rug. If they walk on the left side more, turn the rug completely around every six months so the wear pattern is spread more evenly about. If possible, try to place the rug where people are much less likely to walk over it, especially without thinking.

When you follow these tips, it should help your Persian rug, that investment, last longer than you thought possible.
